Everyone’s got a little creativity in them, but few people can tap into it as consistently—and brilliantly—as Tanaka Tatsuya.  At my sister’s invitation, our families visited an exhibit showcasing the remarkable work of this talented miniature diorama artist.

I love seeing everyday things blown up huge or shrunk down tiny. This glass jar holds a set of 擲筊 (per wikipeida, they’re called “Poe divination” in English). Basically, you toss these two wooden pieces to ask the gods yes or no questions, and the way they land gives you your answer. Normally, they’re about 3–4 inches tall, but these ones are tiny—like the size of a quarter. The red gate below it is actually a parking stop sign. Usually 6 feet wide. Both of these are iconic symbols of Taiwan. While these are not official merchandise by Tanaka Tatsuya, I was glad to spot them at the museum shop.
